Description
We come together today to support a legend in the reggae community, the incomparable Big Joe. Born Joseph Spalding in 1955 in Kingston, Jamaica, Big Joe has been a pillar of Jamaican music for decades, enchanting audiences with his powerful voice and infectious rhythms.
Big Joe’s journey in music began in the early 1970s when he embarked on his recording career. His initial sessions with Harry Mudie produced timeless classics like ‘Run Girl’, ‘Woodcutter Skank’, and ‘Black Stick Rock’. With Lloyd Daley, he blessed us with ‘Glitter Not Gold’, a song that resonated deeply with the struggles and triumphs of everyday life in Jamaica.
But it was with producer Winston Edwards that Big Joe truly made his mark. Tracks like ‘Weed Specialist’, ‘Hog Inna Minty’, and the iconic ‘Selassie Skank’ catapulted him to international fame, particularly with its release in the UK through Dennis Harris’ DIP label. ‘Selassie Skank’ captured the essence of the jubilation surrounding Haile Selassie’s visit to Jamaica, blending it seamlessly with Roman Stewart’s ‘Try Me’ rhythm.
Big Joe’s talent didn’t stop there. At Studio One, he delivered hits like ‘Get Out Baldhead’, ‘Red Rob’, and a DJ version of Larry Marshall’s ‘Nanny Goat’ titled ‘Nanny Version’. His collaborations with Daley and Jackie Brown further solidified his place in the annals of reggae history.
Now, our beloved Big Joe has fallen on hard times. Battling mental illness and facing financial struggles, he needs our help more than ever. Let’s come together as a community to support him on his road to recovery.
Your donations will go towards essential medical treatment, therapy, and basic living expenses. Together, we can ensure that this reggae icon receives the care and support he deserves.
Every contribution counts, no matter how big or small. Let’s show Big Joe the love and appreciation he has showered upon us through his music over the years.
Join us in making a difference in Big Joe’s life today. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on his journey to healing.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
